In other news, as we see our beloved Rachel Sullivan moving on to Texas, we welcome a new instructor to the Shala. Hailing all the way from San Diego, CA, Robin Forbes has quite the impressive background in working with the human body. With degrees in Dance and Psychology, she has also earned over 1200 hours in massage therapy training and has been a certified instructor with the Yoga Alliance since 2010. To see her full bio, visit our “About//Meet the Tribe” section on our web page.
While she is with us, Robin will be regularly teaching the Yin Yoga class Friday’s at 4:45pm and will host a workshop in Bheemashakti Yoga. Details coming soon!
Finally, we would like to take a moment to spotlight one of our current teacher trainees. Alexandrea Shumaker, a Lansing, Michigan native and Michigan State alumni, joins us in this year’s teacher training along with four others. Having practiced yoga for 5 years, she comes from a Bikram based practice, but has enjoyed exploring the vinyasa yoga method since she has been with us here at MJ Yoga. Alexandrea looks forward to studying more into AcroYoga after her certification.
Come support the Shala by also supporting your Self, your health, and your wellbeing.
As we transform, we evolve and grow together. As we grow together, we begin to create a community of health, strength, and compassion.

Have a thirst for more yoga knowledge?
Astrology and yoga are a match made in heaven for the yogi. Both are ways to better understand ourselves, the Self, and the connections in the web of all things. When studied, we can have insight into the basis of our actions and be better prepared for the ups and downs of life as we follow the planetary movements through their destined paths. Currently, the astrological weather is in a state of transition from the old to the new. Let’s take a closer look….
*These measurements fall under the system of Vedic (Eastern) astrology, rather than the Western system of astrology. The main difference is found in the degrees of the zodiac sign. For instance, if you are under the impression that the Sun is moving into Aries tomorrow, March 21, you are studying under the Western system. When, in fact, the Sun has only been in Pisces for 6 days now and will continue its transit until April 14. Still confused? Keep an eye out for our Astrology Workshops at the shala to learn more.
Today, March 20, 2015:
Pisces, the zodiac sign of endings, is having a party of beginnings in their house today. (I say “their” since Pisces is represented by two fish). Not only is the spring equinox bringing about newness in our lives, but the new moon, also a supermoon due to its rather close proximity to the earth, is giving its aspects to the oceans of the world, as well as the oceans of our mind. As most of us know, the moon controls the tide of the waters. Normally, a new moon or full moon will cause the tides to be extreme from high to low. If you’ve been to the beach in the past few days, you may have noticed the unusually heavy activity of the ocean. This is not only because of the new moon, but the added gravitational pull of the supermoon is creating what’s called the Proxigean Spring Tide, a rare and rather excited high tide that only occurs once every 1.5 years at most.
In addition to the lunar activity of the day, we are also experiencing the first eclipse of 2015, where the very close and active new moon has aligned with our direct vision of the Sun. The Sun is our ego and our individual self; it’s what we come to find when we look at where our Sun sits in our birth charts. With this heavy moon shadowing us from the Sun, we may feel as though our ego and pride can subside, whether we like it or not, so that our natural creative and imaginative nature can give rise to a new, more emotionally involved relationship with the world around us.
Now let’s look at things on an even deeper level. The moon affects the waters; the moon represents the mind; our brains are composed of 90% water. We, like the waves of the ocean, are very much influenced here. The moon, Sun, Mars, and Ketu (south node of the moon) are all presently residing in Pisces, a deep and imaginative water sign. If you have yet to experience the heat of your emotions or mental activities (perhaps as an increased level of daydreaming) today or in the past few days, you may feel the effects soon enough. The internal nature of this planetary web, targeting the mind, may be most suited for meditation or even just letting the mind travel through different worlds; maybe through fantasy reading or writing. We may also find ourselves at an end or solution of a troubling circumstance. This is the time to realize where our thoughts and the emotions we invest in those thoughts come into play in the architecture of our future. Rather than evoking the practical side of problem solving, simply taking a fun dip into the pool of our minds may lead us right where we need to be.
Happy Spring Breaking!
